Indian Island Seine Sampling

May 20 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Beach-seine sampling at Indian Island on Friday, May 20

Come observe a team of scientists and experienced volunteers, organized by Kwiaht center for the historical ecology of the Salish Sea, set an 80-foot net in the eelgrass, on either side of the island, and pull in several thousand smallish fish. Pulling the net to shore, the research team will measure, count and sort the fish one by one and as fast as possible to avoid killing any of them. Once the net is “cleared” and if the beach is not too crowded with onlookers, it may be possible to see and learn about the species that thrive in Fishing Bay. This is not an organized field trip, and please keep in mind that the researches will be busy and most likely will not able to engage, but it is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and witness important research while doing so! All ages are welcome!

Fishing gear will go out to Indian Island at 1:00 pm and pulling in the net, picking out the fish, sorting and measuring them, could take an hour. A second set will happen around 2:30 pm, and once again take an hour or so to process the fish. The team should be working on the beach until the tide comes back in, close to 4:00 pm. Remember to dress weather appropriate and please wear  shoes suitable for walking over the unstable rocky beach.  If you are uncomfortable walking over this type of terrain then please watch the research take place from a distance.
